The basics

What Is a Balloon Backdrop?

A balloon backdrop combines a solid background with balloons, so the photo spot looks designed rather than like a bare wall.

Every balloon backdrop has two layers. First comes the surface: a painted or printed panel, a shimmer wall, a flower wall, a grass wall or fabric drape. Then comes the balloon garland that sweeps over or around it. The surface gives you clean color behind everyone's photos, and the balloons add shape, depth and character. Put a name in vinyl or marquee numbers in front and it becomes the centerpiece of the room.

That's why people tend to say balloon arches and backdrops in the same breath: an arch or garland to frame, a backdrop behind it to fill. If you'd rather have balloons covering the entire surface, that's a balloon wall.

Backdrop styles

Balloon Backdrop Styles

The shape of the backdrop sets the mood before a single balloon goes on.

Round backdrops and balloon hoops

A round panel with a garland sweeping across one side is the backdrop we're asked for most for birthdays and showers. A hoop is the see-through version, a metal ring dressed with balloons and florals around part of its edge, sometimes with a light-up sign hung in the center. Hoops shine at weddings and engagement parties because the room stays visible through them, which matters in a loft with brick walls worth showing off.

Chiara (arched) backdrops

Chiara backdrops are tall panels with a rounded top, used on their own or as a set of two or three at staggered heights. They look elegant and current, and they give a garland a graceful line to follow. A second chiara angled beside the first wraps the cake table in a two-wall setup.

Square and panel backdrops

A square backdrop uses a rectangular panel or frame, often with a garland running up one side and over the top. A panel trio, three panels side by side in different heights or colors, makes a wide backdrop for a long dessert or buffet table.

Shimmer walls with balloons

A shimmer wall, sometimes called a sequin wall, is a grid of metallic squares that ripple and catch the light whenever someone walks past. Paired with a garland in matching or contrasting colors, it glows in photos, especially at night parties.

Flower, greenery and grass wall backdrops

Flower walls (silk roses and hydrangeas on panels), greenery walls and grass or boxwood hedge walls bring a garden feel indoors, which is welcome in the middle of a Chicago winter. A balloon garland across a flower wall is a favorite for bridal showers, Mother's Day and baptisms.

Draped and curtain backdrops

Fabric drape or a curtain backdrop suits weddings, galas and school events that need a wide, soft background. Lights placed behind sheer fabric add a warm glow after dark.

Balloon arch backdrops and photo booths

An arch backdrop sets a balloon arch in front of a solid board, or builds the arch right into it. It doubles as a photo booth backdrop: put a ring light or a photo booth in front and the design lands in every picture of the night.

Add-ons

Backdrop Extras: Signs, Marquee Letters, Custom Names and Pedestals

The extras are what make a backdrop personal, and what people remember when they scroll back through the photos.

LED neon signs

Ready-made phrases like Happy Birthday, Oh Baby or Better Together, or a sign with a custom name.

Custom vinyl

A name, an age, a date or a monogram applied to the panel in the color you pick.

Marquee letters and numbers

Light-up letters and numbers, 3 to 4 feet tall, set in front of the backdrop and often wrapped in garland.

Pedestals and cake stands

Cylinders and plinths in front of the backdrop to hold the cake, the cupcakes and the gifts.

Balloon columns

Balloon columns on either side for a wider, grander setup.

Floor balloons and bubbles

Balloon clusters and clear bubbles grouped around the base so the setup looks finished.

Sizing

How Much Room a Balloon Backdrop Needs

Most backdrops are 6 to 8 feet wide. Save room in front for the table and whoever is holding the camera.

Occasions

Balloon Backdrops for Grad Parties, Birthdays, Showers and Holidays

The backdrop is usually where the photos happen, so we plan it around the guest of honor.

  • Graduation balloon backdrops: school colors, light-up class-year numbers and an easel with the graduate's portrait, busiest from late May through June.
  • Birthday balloon backdrops: first birthdays, 21sts and 50ths, kids' character themes and grown-up glam setups.
  • Wedding, engagement and bridal shower backdrops: hoops, chiara trios and flower walls in white, nude and blush.
  • Gender reveal and sprinkle backdrops: neutral setups with a reveal moment, or pastel backdrops for showers.
  • Baptism and christening backdrops: white, ivory and pale blue or pink with florals, often in the parish hall after the service.
  • Sweet 16 and quinceañera backdrops: chrome balloons, crowns and her name lit up, made for the big entrance.
  • Holiday backdrops: winter wonderland, Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day and Thanksgiving.

Planning

Tips for a Backdrop That Photographs Well

A few placement choices matter more than the backdrop you choose.

  • Keep it away from windows. Light from behind turns faces into silhouettes on a phone. Loft venues with big factory windows look great, but set the backdrop against a solid wall, not in front of the glass.
  • Light the front. A ring light or a soft lamp facing the backdrop beats overhead light every time.
  • Give it room. Allow 5–6 feet in front for the table, the guests and the person taking the picture.
  • Measure the ceiling. Check the height before picking a 7 ft chiara or a 10×10 ft backdrop, especially in a garden unit or an older two-flat.
  • Outside, plan for wind. A backdrop catches wind like a sail. Outdoor backdrops get weighted bases and go against a wall, garage or fence, and rooftop decks get extra weight because gusts are stronger up there.

Questions

Balloon Backdrops in Chicago: FAQ

How much do balloon backdrops cost?

Backdrop rentals start at $95 for a panel and $150 for a shimmer wall. A styled backdrop with a balloon garland starts at $395, and a hoop or A-frame backdrop starts at $525. Most full setups fall between $395 and $850.

What does an arch-and-backdrop combo cost?

Our arch-and-backdrop combinations usually run $475–$850, depending on garland length, the backdrop surface and extras like a sign or marquee numbers.

How large is a 10 by 10 backdrop?

Ten feet wide and ten feet tall. It needs about 12 feet of wall and a ceiling of roughly 11 feet, so it fits banquet halls, ballrooms and lofts better than most homes.

How many balloons does a balloon hoop take?

A garland covering a third to half of a 6–7 ft hoop usually takes about 60–120 balloons in mixed sizes. Wrapping the whole hoop takes more.

Can I rent a backdrop without balloons?

Yes. Shimmer walls, flower walls, grass walls and panels can be rented on their own, and balloons can be added later if you want them.

Where should the backdrop go?

On a solid wall with no window behind it, and with 5–6 feet of open floor in front for the table and the photographer. Outside, tuck it against a garage, fence or building out of the wind, and into shade in summer.

What are some alternatives to a backdrop?

A balloon wall, a large arch standing in front of a bare wall, fabric draping, or a garland around a doorway all create a photo spot without a separate panel.

Can you add a name or sign to the backdrop?

Yes. Names, ages and dates go on the panel in custom vinyl, and LED signs hang on the backdrop or inside a balloon hoop.
