The basics

What Is a Balloon Garland?

A garland is a long, bendable run of balloon clusters that can trace nearly any line in a room.

Picture balloon clusters strung one after another along a strip, so the whole thing flexes. That flexibility is the point: a garland can rise around a door frame, swoop along a mantel, follow a banister down the stairs, hug the edge of a cake table or sweep across a backdrop. Put the same garland on a frame and you have a balloon arch; bend it into a circle and it's a hoop. It's the piece of balloon decor we hang most often at home parties for exactly that reason.

Since garlands are sold by the foot, budgeting is simple. Measure the mantel, the doorway or the table edge, add a little for overhang, and you'll have a good idea of the cost before you even ask.

Organic vs. classic

Organic Balloon Garlands vs. Classic Garlands

Nearly every garland we're asked for today is organic. Here's what the word means, and when the classic style still wins.

What does organic balloon garland mean?

Organic means the balloon sizes are mixed (small 5-inch fillers, regular 11-inch, and 16- to 24-inch statement balloons) and grouped in uneven clusters, so the run looks natural and full rather than patterned. The texture and movement are what make it read as decor instead of something grabbed off a party-store shelf.

Organic garland vs. regular garland

A regular, or classic, garland repeats one cluster of same-size balloons over and over, so it looks like a neat rope or a spiral. It's symmetrical and uses fewer balloons. Organic garlands are looser and fuller and take more balloons per foot. Classic suits school, team and brand colors where you want crisp lines; organic suits showers, weddings, birthdays and anything that's headed for photos.

Balloon garland clusters and accents

A garland is built from small clusters of three or four balloons. The accents tucked in between are what change the personality: chrome and pearl balloons, double-stuffed balloons for shades you can't buy off the shelf, foil stars and hearts, and confetti-filled clear balloons.

Placement

Where Balloon Garlands Work Best

If something can be hung from or laid along, a garland can probably go there.

Doorways and front doors

Around the front door of a two-flat, a back-porch door or a venue entrance, so guests know they've found the party.

Fireplace mantels

Plenty of Chicago greystones and bungalows still have a mantel, and a garland across it dresses the whole living room in one move.

Staircases and railings

A garland trailing down the banister of an Oak Park Victorian or a suburban two-story makes the entrance for sweet 16s and engagement parties.

Cake, dessert and gift tables

Draped along the front of the table or laid down the middle as a runner, it frames the cake for every photo.

Backdrops and shimmer walls

A garland sweeping over a panel, shimmer wall or flower wall is the photo spot we set up more than any other.

Walls, fences and easels

On a bare wall, a backyard chain-link or wood fence, or around an easel holding a welcome sign or a grad photo.

Marquee letters and numbers

Wrapped around light-up letters or numbers that spell an age, a name or a class year.

Storefronts and offices

Across a shop window, a reception desk or a lobby for openings, sales and employee appreciation days.

Sizing

Choosing a Balloon Garland Length

Measure the space, then add a foot or two. A garland that spills past the edges looks generous; one that stops short looks skimpy.

Garland lengths, where they fit and rough balloon counts
LengthGood forOrganic balloons (approx.)
5–6 ftA cake table, a small mantel, an accent on one wall60–110
8 ftA 6 ft table with drape, or a mantel with overhang100–145
10 ftA front door or interior doorway, a 7 ft backdrop120–180
12–15 ftA long buffet, double doors, or a backdrop with garland150–270
20 ft and longerStaircases, long walls, stages, a full arch240–360+

These counts assume an organic garland at about 12–18 balloons per foot. Fuller designs and bigger balloons change the math.

How many balloons does a 20-foot garland need? In organic style, somewhere around 240–360. Built classic-style from 11-inch balloons, the same 20 feet takes closer to 100–130.

Garland Finishes: Florals, Greenery, Chrome, Pearl and Mini

Every garland starts with the same base. These finishes are what make it look like yours.

Balloon garlands with flowers and greenery

Work silk or fresh flowers, eucalyptus, ferns, pampas or other greenery in between the clusters and a garland starts to look like a floral piece. It's the go-to for bridal showers, baptisms, garden parties and Mother's Day brunches.

Pearl, chrome and metallic garlands

Pearl balloons give a soft glow, and chrome balloons have a mirror finish in gold, silver, rose gold and champagne. Scatter a few through each cluster and the whole garland looks more expensive. Full-chrome garlands are a regular request for New Year's Eve and golden anniversaries.

Mini and small balloon garlands

Mini garlands are built mostly from 5-inch balloons for a dainty strand that fits a cake table, a cake topper, a first-birthday high chair or the mirror in a studio apartment.

Hanging and ceiling garlands

A garland can also go overhead, swagged across a ceiling, over a dance floor or along the beams of a loft. Since those are rigged to the building, we treat them as custom balloon installations.

Pricing

How Much Does a Balloon Garland Cost in Chicago?

Our garlands are priced per foot. Here's where each style starts and what changes the total.

Balloon garland pricing
GarlandStarting at
Accent garland (lighter, fewer large balloons)$22 per foot
Standard organic garland$28 per foot
Deluxe garland (fuller, with chrome, foil or florals)$38 per foot
Grab-and-go garland, 5 ft (you pick up and hang)$110
Grab-and-go garland, 8 ft$150

Installed garlands have a 6 ft minimum. Delivery and hanging are included in the city and inner suburbs.

What affects the price: the length, how full you want it, how many large, chrome or double-stuffed balloons go in, florals and foil accents, whether we hang it or you pick it up, and how far we drive. As an example, a 10 ft standard organic garland installed at your home starts around $280, and every quote is written for your specific event.

Your options

Grab-and-Go Garlands vs. Installed Garlands

Both work. The right one depends on the length and how hands-on you want to be.

What is a grab-and-go balloon garland? It's a ready-made garland, usually 5 to 8 feet, that you pick up and hang yourself, which keeps costs down for small spaces. Anything much longer than 8 feet won't ride well in a car, so those get installed. In winter, warm the car up before you load it; the balloons will look a little shrunken in the cold and fill back out once they're inside.

Timing

How Long Balloon Garlands Last, and How Far Ahead They Can Be Built

Air-filled garlands hold up for days indoors, which makes the timing easy for most parties.

How long do balloon garlands last? Air-filled and kept indoors at a normal room temperature, an organic garland stays full for several days and often more than a week before it softens. On a shaded porch or patio in spring or fall it lasts about a day. In direct summer sun it fades and pops within hours, and outside in freezing weather it shrinks and wrinkles just as fast.

How early can a balloon garland be made? For an indoor party, a day or two ahead is fine and nobody will see a difference. Most of our clients book the install the night before or the morning of. Outdoor garlands, summer or winter, go up the same day and as close to the start as we can make it.

Questions

Balloon Garlands in Chicago: FAQ

What is a balloon garland?

It's a long, bendable strand of balloon clusters that can hang over a doorway, run along a mantel or banister, drape across a table or wrap a backdrop. Put it on a frame and it becomes a balloon arch.

How much do balloon garlands usually cost?

Garlands are sold by the foot. Ours start at $22 per foot for an accent garland and $28 per foot for a standard organic garland, installed, with a 6 ft minimum. Grab-and-go garlands you pick up start at $110 for 5 ft.

How long do balloon garlands last?

Air-filled and indoors, several days and often a week or longer. About a day outside in shade, and just a few hours in strong summer sun or below-freezing cold.

How many balloons does a 20-foot garland need?

Somewhere around 240–360 if it's organic, since those run 12–18 balloons to the foot. Built classic-style with 11-inch balloons, 20 feet takes about 100–130.

How is an organic garland different from a regular one?

Organic garlands mix balloon sizes in loose, uneven clusters, so they look full and textured. Regular garlands repeat same-size clusters in a tight, even pattern and use fewer balloons.

How far ahead can a garland be made?

A day or two ahead for indoor parties, with no visible change. Outdoor garlands should be hung on the day of the event.

How is a balloon garland different from a balloon arch?

The garland is the strand itself. An arch is a garland, or rows of classic clusters, mounted on a frame so it stands and curves on its own. Garlands can also lie flat along walls, mantels and tables.

Can a garland go up without hurting my walls?

Yes. We use freestanding frames, tension rods, removable hooks or fixtures that are already there, not tape that lifts paint. Plaster walls in older Chicago apartments and hotel walls with no-tape rules both get the frame treatment.

Will a garland survive the trip home in winter?

Yes. Cold makes the air in the balloons contract, so a grab-and-go garland can look a little shrunken after a cold car ride. Give it half an hour indoors and it fills back out. Just don't leave it in a parked car for long in summer heat or a deep freeze.

What are good alternatives to a balloon garland?

Fabric draping, a paper-flower wall, a greenery garland or a shimmer wall. Lots of hosts pair a shimmer or flower wall with a short balloon garland to get a bit of both.
